An Ashtanga Yoga Retreat - Letting Go
A retreat with Joey Miles
17 April to 24 April, 24 April to 1 May 2022
In this week-long Ashtanga retreat, you will explore the theme of letting go, taking inspiration from Carl Rogers:
“One of the most satisfying feelings I know - and also one of the most growth-promoting experiences for the other person - comes from my appreciating this individual in the same way that I appreciate a sunset. People are just as wonderful as sunsets if I can let them be. In fact, perhaps the reason we can truly appreciate a sunset is that we cannot control it. I don’t find myself saying, ‘Soften the orange a little on the right-hand corner, and put a bit more purple along the base, and use a little more pink in the cloud color’. I don’t do that. I don’t try to control a sunset. I watch it with awe as it unfolds. I like myself best when I can appreciate my staff member, my son, my daughter, my grandchildren, in this same way. I believe this is a somewhat Oriental attitude; for me, it is a most satisfying one.”
- Carl Rogers - Experiences in Communication.
This retreat offers a structure within which to completely let go. Let go of all expectations. Let go of all effort. Let go of all our roles and occupations. When we let go, even if only a little bit, how might we feel and who might we then be?
This retreat is open for all levels of practitioners – from beginners to advanced.
The week consists of 6 morning Mysore Classes and 4 afternoon workshops ( note that it is the same schedule both weeks) :
Each day will begin with 30 minutes of meditation before beginning postural practice. Joey will give some instructions but it will not be guided all the way through, this is suitable for all levels of meditation experience. Joey will also provide recommendations for ways to sit to help the body be both alert and comfortable. Establishing a sitting posture in which we experience comfort and ease, helps us to be less distracted by the body and over time makes possible a shift in our sense of self, whereby we no longer experience ourselves as limited to the physical body; we come to experience ourselves as vast and expansive, non-separate from the world around us.
Joey is a student in the Sanbo Zen lineage and so his approach to meditation will be in line with the teachings of this school. However, if you have an established meditation practice which differs in technique, there is no pressure to follow Joey’s instructions. You are most welcome to simply use this time to continue practicing in the way which you are already accustomed to meditating. If for whatever reason, you prefer not to join the meditation, that is ok too!
After the morning meditation, there will be a Mysore-style self-practice class. As students work independently on the sequence, practicing the poses up to the point which they have been taught, Joey will give attention to students individually, providing physical adjustments, instruction and giving suggestions or adaptations. Beginners will need to memorise the beginning of the Ashtanga Primary series.
Workshop 1 - contemplation and connection – a chance to reflect on your reasons for coming on retreat, your yoga practice and connect with others on the course
Workshop 2 - emphasis on standing lateral poses and twists
Workshop 3 – emphasis on extending the front body (backbends)
Workshop 4 – emphasis on the shoulder girdle and inversions
Grounded and approachable, Joey’s ‘common sense’ approach stems from his deep respect for the ashtanga practice, combined with experiential knowledge of alignment and anatomy. Joey brings a fresh pair of eyes to your practice, giving guidance on how to make the sequences work for you. His pragmatism, humour and caring nature will leave you feeling inspired and deeply connected with your practice.
Joey began daily yoga practice over 20 years ago and was Authorised to teach by Pattabhi Jois in 2004. Joey is currently training in person centred counselling and sitting zazen under the guidance of Roshi Sandy Chubb of Sanbo Zen.
Maximum number of students is 35.
Morning classes will be taught with maximum 20 students in each class.
