Moments In Yoga: A Mindful Approach to Ashtanga Yoga – A Two Week Immersion with Scott Johnson

Over these 2 weeks, Scott Johnson will guide you through the many elements of yoga that help us to become more present in our lives. Through the practices of Ashtanga Yoga, meditation and philosophy we will look at how their integration helps us find our own way, our own unique movement and our innate connection to ourselves and the world.

How do we individually approach yoga in relation to our own lives? Can we see deeper into how yoga can help us nurture our breath and movement awareness? How does yoga philosophy integrate with how we see and act in the world?

Noticing how this all plays out allows us to arrive in awareness of ourselves, our physical practice, and the present moment. Again, and again, and again…

About the teacher

Scott Johnson has been practicing yoga since 1999 and been teaching since 2004. He is the co-founder and director at Stillpoint Yoga London, based in London Bridge UK, which he established in 2009.

Scott has taught daily Ashtanga Yoga assisted self practice at Stillpoint ever since it opened. Over the years he has built a wide and dedicated Ashtanga Yoga community based on a mindful approach to the practice.

He was introduced to Ashtanga yoga by John Scott in 2002. Manju Jois authorised Scott to teach the Ashtanga Yoga Primary and Intermediate series. Scott has a deep connection to the ancient practices of prānāyāma and Vedic chanting that Manju shares.

Scott has undergone  Mindfulness training under the tutelage of Cathy Mae Keralse at Clear Mind International, gaining their level 3 certificate in Mindfulness and Compassion in 2015. He studied extensively with his late yoga and dharma teacher, Michael Stone.

Scott sees movement, mindfulness and philosophy as three ways of approaching the same goal, of a deeply integrated and holistic approach to discovering our own unique patterns of being. He is deeply interested in how the teachings of yoga can come alive in each person’s life. He teaches with encouragement, insight and integrity to the teachings of Ashtanga yoga and mindfulness.

He brings these insights into every class he teaches. His devotion and dedication helps practitioners in discovering how contemplative practice can unfold not only on the mat, but also to find deeper meaning in their daily lives. His love of contemplative practices creates a rich, nurturing environment within which the healing power of yoga and mindfulness can unfold.

Scott is the host of ‘Stillpoints: A podcast with Scott Johnson’ where he engages in conversation with inspiring guests, those whose lives have been changed by yoga and contemplative practices. He releases short films, ‘People of Yoga’ each week on YouTube, where he shines a light on the personal stories of the many amazing people he has been fortunate enough to meet.

Course content and daily schedule

Session 1

Mysore, Prānāyāma and Mindfulness

Each morning will begin with gentle inquiry setting the tone as you step mindfully into your Ashtanga Yoga self practice. Scott will lead you through guided meditations on the foundational aspects of mindfulness, followed by prānāyāma and breathing practices. During the Mysore style Ashtanga practise, Scott will work with you individually and help you discover more space and movement in your practice. This collaborative approach will help you find new ways to meet and develop your practice.

Session 2

Where Philosophy Meets the Body

With an emphasis on how philosophy and movement relate, the later session will be a mix of yoga philosophy, movement technique and anatomy. Each session will draw on yoga philosophy and āsana technique.

Below is an example of a weekly schedule. Please note that the timings of classes may be changed and adjusted to best nourish the teaching environment and the student. Additional activities not mentioned on the schedule may be added.
