Rejuvenate through Yoga

20 January to 27 January 2024
A retreat with Jock Orton

This week-long retreat is designed to rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul.  Designed to honour your individual yoga practice with a focus on posture and alignment to support a lifetime of safe and enjoyable practice.

This retreat is suitable for all. Beginners and experienced students alike will find a safe and nurturing space to become familiar with your own body, understand how it moves and its potential.  Jock’s particular interest is in individualised alignment, anatomy and adjustment. He will help you to better understand how your body moves and how to harness its full potential.  Supporting you to go deeper into your practice in a way which is safe and suitable for your own body.  He has many years of experience in supporting recovery from injury and illness and can tailor and modify the practice to suit each person’s physical and emotional needs.

Retreat schedule

Each day will start with a morning meditation followed by a dynamic and energising led practice. There is the option for lots of adjustments suitable for your body and practice.  The practice will focus on how the relationship of your breath is inextricably linked to every movement and you will come away from the week having learnt the safest alignment for your body. When you learn how to practice in harmony with your body type and capabilities you support a lifetime of safe and enjoyable practice.

The afternoon workshop sessions will be a chance to focus on specific areas of the body and work on postures, which you may not have the confidence to practice at home.  One of Jock’s skills is breaking down complex postures so that the impossible become possible. There will be a focus on the energetic and physical alignment in the Asanas, the importance of breath in your practice and the benefits of using the bandhas. Come with an open mind and be prepared to learn and laugh in equal measure!

Jock has been teaching for over 20 years and co-founded Lime House Yoga in Cornwall with his wife Emma.  His own journey to yoga came after falling down a mountain snowboarding in 2000, breaking his back in numerous places and shattering his shoulder. After numerous unsuccessful operations to piece him back together he began a regular yoga practice that enabled him to not only heal from his injuries but thrive in the process.

Over the years he has trained with several world-renowned yoga teachers including Bridget Woods-Kramer, John Scott, Manju Jois to name a few.  His own daily practice is a non-dogmatic Ashtanga practice and leans heavily on all the teachings he has been fortunate to receive over the years.

He has developed a style that is physically challenging with attention to posture and alignment and above all, playful. His experience has taught him to cherish the physical practice of yoga, but it is the connection between mind and body that inspires his practice.

Jock resists aligning himself with a ‘school’ of yoga, describing his style as just ‘Yoga’.  Every class is a personal blend of the styles, techniques and adjustments he’s learnt along his yoga journey.  He is registered as a Senior Teacher Trainer with the Yoga Alliance Professionals.  Jock is also dad to two wonderful children who constantly inspire and challenge him to be more present in the world and on his mat.

Practical details about the retreat center

Currently the internet at the retreat is not reliable. If you are dependent on internet for work, we ask you to bring your own data on your phone, to which you can connect your laptop, if needed. Phones work very well. There is also a cafe 10 minutes from the retreat with good internet, however, it is a busy cafe and not very suitable for work.

Finca Naranjas ( previously Cristoforo) , our retreat centre is a very simple yet beautiful place, built by an architect named Denis Devaris, who had an intention to create a meeting point for Spiritual seekers. Built slowly over 30 years using volcanic rocks from the island, the rooms are all unique with their own distinct personalities featuring beautiful details and personal touches. Given the nature of these types of buildings, imperfection is to be expected with a plumbing system not quite up to modern standards! However, set right into the land with a wonderfully lush garden, Cristoforo really is an oasis in South Tenerife. When packing for your retreat, make sure you add warmer clothes. From December till March the mornings and evenings can be quite chilly. The rooms are not heated, but are equipped with cozy duvets and hot water bottles for the beds. All rooms are equipped with a water kettle.

The meals
The food served at the retreat will be mainly vegan and completely vegetarian, prepared freshly everyday by our wonderful retreat chefs. We try were possible to use local and organic products. We sometimes use eggs or dairy in the kitchen. If you have food allergies/sensitivities, please let us know. Gluten free options are available. We have a self service tea & coffee station for guest use and try to provide fruit for snacking during the day.
You have the option to enjoy your food either inside or outside in the beautiful garden.

The practice
Maximum number of students is 25.

Practice will take place inside the beautiful wooden garden Shala. Savasana is usually taken outside to make space in the Shala, especially during full retreats and occasionally afternoon workshops will take place outside. Make sure you pack warm practice clothes for Savasana.
