Would you like to shine a new light on your Ashtanga Yoga practice? Over 6 days Scott will support you through your personal practice of Ashtanga yoga, its importance in your life and how it plays out for you through the formal practices of movement and stillness. 

Through the lenses of Mysore style Ashtanga Yoga, movement patterns and theory, mindfulness approaches and yoga philosophical outlooks Scott will help you see these as aspects of a personal sadhana. You will be encouraged to notice how a compassionate outlook towards yourself and your life is the key to the process of living a meaningful and contemplative life. 

This retreat will leave you with a deeper insight into how you move in your practice, where you place your intention and how you can meet your practice with a sense of compassion and wonder. 

Course Content

The immersion will include:

  • Mindfulness meditation
  • Pranayama/breathing techniques
  • Ashtanga yoga - Self practice and guided classes
  • Chanting
  • Philosophy
  • Movement technique and theory

What you will gain from the immersion:
Over the intensive you will gain insight into your own patterns of practice and how to move in your own unique way. If working with pain or injuries there will be fresh light on how to alleviate and work with these issues. We will use the wider context of anatomy, mindfulness and philosophy to see how we can notice things in a fresh way. This will also help you to see the practice of yoga in a wider context to your life. 

Retreat schedule 

Morning Classes

06:30 - 07:30 - Guided Mindfulness Meditation, Breathing & Chanting.
Scott will begin each day with an optional guided mindfulness meditation and breathing hour to set you up for your morning asana practice and the day ahead. 

07:30 - 09:30 - Mysore Style Assisted Self Practice Ashtanga Yoga
Scott will support, encourage and help you develop your Ashtanga Yoga self practice whether you’re a beginner or advanced practitioner. 

Afternoon workshops
4pm - 6pm - Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday - Workshops on Movement, mindfulness approaches and yoga philosophy covering sutra 1.20: The five powers… 

Workshop 1: Discovering ourselves in practice  
This workshop will focus on the body and our direct experience of our world and physical environment. We will see how movement and stillness are at the heart of breath and movement awareness and that vinyasa is already an inherent process within us.

In this session we will also look at shraddha (self belief) in relation to our asana practice, unpacking how we are able to move and make decisions as we continue along the path of yoga. 

Workshop 2: Discovering energy in practice…
This workshop will focus on the energetic approach to practice. Also we’ll look at the energy we discover in the body and how we make decisions based on this awareness. Using the movement patterns of the primary series, forward bends and backbends, we will see if we can notice patterns of energy that play out for us.

In this session we will look at virya (energy) in relation to our asana practice and life, connecting to the ways in which we bring ourselves to our mat and cushion.

Workshop 3:  Remembering why we practice…
This workshop will help us to see the mental impressions that arise throughout our yoga practice in response to feelings, experiences or anything else. We will discover this through the lens of back bending patterns, and see how we can move through them with empathy and care.

In this session we will look at smriti (mindfulness, remembering) in relation to our asana practice and see the ways we hold ourselves as we practice

Workshop 4: How to approach the future…
This being the last workshop of the retreat we will see the way things play out for us in our lives as a response to our practice. A personal Sadhana is about discovering the ability to trust ourselves and the choices we make. This workshop will be a yoga clinic, an insightful approach to interaction where you can ask anything about any aspect of the practice. Between us all we’ll work it out… 

In this session we will look at Samadhi and Prajna (deep concentration and wisdom).

Over a long period of dedicated practice we will change. Will we become wiser? Who knows, but the process leads us to finding some kind of wisdom.


Scott Johnson has been practicing yoga since 1999. He is the co-founder and director at Stillpoint Yoga London which he established in 2009. Stillpoint is one of only two dedicated Ashtanga Yoga self practice spaces in London. Scott has taught Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga since 2004 and at Stillpoint since it opened. He was introduced to the practice of Ashtanga yoga by John Scott in 2002 and studied with him for over fifteen years. 

Scott is authorised to teach the primary and intermediate series of ashtanga yoga by Manju Jois and has a deep connection to the ancient practices of pranayama and vedic chanting that Manju shares. Scott has also undergone extensive Mindfulness training under the tutelage of Cathy Mae Keralse at Clear Mind International, gaining their level 3 certificate in Mindfulness and Compassion in 2015.

Scott teaches with encouragement, insight and integrity to the teachings of Ashtanga yoga and mindfulness that he has had access to. His deep love of the contemplative side of these practice creates a rich, nurturing environment and he is deeply dedicated to the healing power of yoga and mindfulness in the people that he is fortunate to meet. 

Scott sees movement and mindfulness as the same, a deeply holistic approach to discovering our own unique patterns. He brings these insights into every class he teaches. His devotion and dedication to these practices assists practitioners in discovering how contemplative practice can unfold not only personally on the mat, but also to find deeper meaning in their daily lives.

Practical details about the retreat center

Currently the internet at the retreat is not reliable. If you are dependent on internet for work, we ask you to bring your own data on your phone, to which you can connect your laptop, if needed. Phones work very well. There is also a cafe 10 minutes from the retreat with good internet, however, it is a busy cafe and not very suitable for work. 

Finca Naranjas (previously Cristoforo) , our retreat centre is a simple yet beautiful place, built by an architect named Denis Devaris, who had an intention to create a meeting point for Spiritual seekers. Built slowly over 30 years using volcanic rocks from the island, the rooms are all unique with their own distinct personalities featuring beautiful details and personal touches. Given the nature of these types of buildings, imperfection is to be expected with a plumbing system not quite up to modern standards! However, set right into the land with a wonderfully lush garden, Finca Naranjas really is an oasis in South Tenerife. Through the years we have noticed that once the students and teachers arrive they immediately adapt to the peaceful environment, rarely wanting to leave the beautiful surroundings. Finca Naranjas is truly a retreat to retreat at! When packing for your retreat, make sure you add warmer clothes. From December till March the mornings and evenings can be quite chilly. The rooms are not heated, but are equipped with cozy duvets and blankets.

The meals
The food served at the retreat will be mainly vegan and completely vegetarian, prepared freshly everyday by our wonderful retreat chefs. We try were possible to use local and organic products. We sometimes use eggs or dairy in the kitchen. If you have food allergies/sensitivities, please let us know. Gluten free options are available. We have a self service tea & coffee station for guest use and try to provide fruit for snacking during the day.
You have the option to enjoy your food either inside or outside in the beautiful garden.

The practice
Maximum number of students is 30.
Practice will take place inside the beautiful wooden garden Shala. Savasana is usually taken outside to make space in the Shala, especially during full retreats and occasionally afternoon workshops will take place outside. Make sure you pack warm practice clothes for Savasana.

Arrival day and check out. 
The rooms are available after 3pm. The retreat starts with an introduction meeting at 5pm, followed by dinner at 6.30pm. All students should aim to arrive for the introduction meeting. The first practice is on Sunday morning and the last practice is on Friday in the morning. The check out is on Saturday at 9am.

As much as possible we are trying to adjust to various budgets, and this year we offer two comfortable dormitory options - La Huerta  and Danae 2. We also have a wonderful villa which can accommodate 5 practitioners - Yin Yang. The Yin-yang option is perfect for friends and families.

Shared option mean that 2 students of the same gender share room. 

Premium rooms
The premium rooms are the largest rooms at the retreat. These rooms have attached indoor bathrooms.

The standard rooms are smaller than the premium rooms. These rooms have attached, indoor bathrooms. La Granja is a house with two rooms which share a bathroom.

The budget rooms are the smallest rooms at the retreat. Some of the rooms share bathrooms, a few of them are outdoors bathrooms. In a few of the rooms there may have disturbance from the road.

Yin -Yang Exclusive Dormitory
A unique 5 bed villa perfect for a group of friends or a family. The house has a kitchen, private patio and 2 bathrooms. Is also used for students booking individually.

The accommodation price is all-inclusive (includes accommodation, all meals and yoga). There is an option to pay a deposit of 50% of the full amount to secure your place. The deposit is non-refundable and the balance must be paid at least 4 weeks prior to the start date.
