Exploring the Unknown through the Known

A retreat with Corrie Ananda

13 April to 20 April 2024

Breath, Body, World - Discovery and exploration through Ashtanga Yoga

The body is the first world we inhabit – moving mindfully to the flow of our breath allows us to watch our internal landscape, inquire into who we are, and better understand our processes of ‘becoming’. As we come to know, understand, and accept the different parts of ourselves, we can be more at ease in the world with ourselves and others. Through the ordinary we catch glimpses of the extraordinary.

This retreat is open for all levels of practitioners – from beginners to advanced.

Retreat schedule

Morning practice
Sitting meditation, pranayama, guided self-practice taught individually in a group setting.

Afternoon workshops
There will be 4, afternoon workshops designed to support and enrich your morning practice. There will be plenty of time for discussion, reflection and sharing discoveries. According to the unique needs of the group we will explore from the following themes:

* The subtle and gross connections.

* How yogic philosophy and yoga psychology can support our personal inquiry.

* Safe movement techniques to help us create a sustainable practice for life; how to support and work with complex joints such as the knees and shoulders.

* Understanding the journey of key asanas - how they begin, and how they unravel across primary, intermediate, advanced A and advanced B.

Awakening the upper back and shoulders for backbends and arm balances.

Teacher

Corrie Ananda
‘I love movement and philosophy - I am intrigued by the connections between the physical/ psychological/emotional body; ‘being in the world’ and exploring the unknown through the known.’

Having completed the Ashtanga yoga Primary, Intermediate and Advanced A sequences Corrie is working her way through Advanced B. Corrie received the level II authorisation certificate to teach the Jois Ashtanga Yoga method by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India, in 2014. Corrie shares her teachings amongst the thriving ‘Shoreditch Ashtangis’ community housed at Mission-e1, London. Holding the ‘traditional method’ in mind Corrie’s approach is progressive, inclusive, and inquiring, with a focus on the individual, sustainable practice, and listening to messages from the body to gain a deeper understanding of the self.

Alongside teaching and practising ashtanga yoga, Corrie’s doctoral thesis ‘the meaning of movement’ investigates the phenomenological experience of people who choose movement practices as a means of understanding and creating themselves in the world.

Qualifications: MA in the Traditions of Yoga and Meditation (SOAS, London): PG.Cert. Practical details about the retreat center

Currently the internet at the retreat is not reliable. If you are dependent on internet for work, we ask you to bring your own data on your phone, to which you can connect your laptop, if needed. Phones work very well. There is also a cafe 10 minutes from the retreat with good internet, however, it is a busy cafe and not very suitable for work.

Finca Naranjas (previously Cristoforo), our retreat centre is a very simple yet beautiful place, built by an architect named Denis Devaris, who had an intention to create a meeting point for Spiritual seekers. Built slowly over 30 years using volcanic rocks from the island, the rooms are all unique with their own distinct personalities featuring beautiful details and personal touches. Given the nature of these types of buildings, imperfection is to be expected with a plumbing system not quite up to modern standards! However, set right into the land with a wonderfully lush garden, Cristoforo really is an oasis in South Tenerife. When packing for your retreat, make sure you add warmer clothes. From December till March the mornings and evenings can be quite chilly. The rooms are not heated, but are equipped with cozy duvets and hot water bottles for the beds.

The meals
The food served at the retreat will be mainly vegan and completely vegetarian, prepared freshly everyday by our wonderful retreat chefs. We try were possible to use local and organic products. We sometimes use eggs or dairy in the kitchen. If you have food allergies/sensitivities, please let us know. Gluten free options are available. We have a self service tea & coffee station for guest use and try to provide fruit for snacking during the day.
You have the option to enjoy your food either inside or outside in the beautiful garden.

The practice
Maximum number of students is 25.
Morning classes will be taught with maximum 16 students in each class.

Practice will take place inside the beautiful wooden garden Shala. Savasana is usually taken outside to make space in the Shala, especially during full retreats and occasionally afternoon workshops will take place outside. Make sure you pack warm practice clothes for Savasana.

Arrival day and check out.
