Four afternoon workshops:
1. Setting Strong Foundations
This workshop emphasises the importance of establishing a strong foundation in your ashtanga practice. It covers fundamental yoga poses of Surya Namaskara and standing postures and emphasises how they translate into more advance practice of postures. It includes not only alignment principles and breathwork (pranayama), but also the significance of a solid foundation in both physical postures and mental focus.
2. Establishing the Straight Lines
This workshop delves into refining and aligning the body, mind, and spirit. It explores the concept of straight lines as a metaphor for finding balance, improving posture, enhancing mental clarity, and cultivating a sense of purpose within yoga poses and daily life.
3. Bending Through the Curves
This session focuses on the strength and mobility aspects of body opening in the backbends practice of ashtanga practice. Finding your psoas and developing the movement from within involves exploration of strengths coming from the depth of your core, your inner thighs, pelvic floor and other layers of muscle. Through the activation of these regions of the body we embrace the flexibility and strength of both body and mind. The workshop helps you to find resilience, acceptance, adaptability, and navigating life's challenges with grace and strength.
4. Floating Like a Feather
This workshop centers around finding lightness, ease, and mindfulness in yoga practice. It involve practices of vinyasa and transitions (jumps back and through) to foster a sense of inner strength and agility and experiencing a deeper level of lightness while at the same time cultivating mental non-attachment.
Each workshop includes a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical exercises, guided sessions, group discussions, and self-reflective activities. Moreover, integrating themes of personal growth, self-awareness, and mindfulness within each workshop creates a holistic and enriching experience for participants.
John and Marta, the founders of Ashtanga Yoga Nilayam in Singapore are dedicated Ashtanga practitioners each with over a decade of teaching experience.
Their holistic approach to teaching is guided by the belief that everything in life happens for a reason, that every experience has something to teach us.
For Marta and John, the practice of Ashtanga Yoga has been a journey of healing to meet their bodies anew every day. They are committed to daily Sadhana, convinced that they are becoming a slightly better version of themselves every day.
Marta began her journey in Ashtanga Yoga in 2008, having previously learnt under the lineage of BNS Iyengar. John had his first experience with yoga at the tender age of 9 and has always felt a strong connection to these teachings. John and Marta met in Mysore in 2017 and began to teach together very soon after in Singapore.
Marta and John teach Ashtanga Yoga in its entirety, with appropriate emphasis on each of the eight limbs (astau-anga). They help their students appreciate Yoga beyond asana by guiding them through the practice of kriya, pranayama, meditation, and Vedic chanting. Their workshops and retreats are designed to encourage students to open up and freely exchange ideas and experiences. They often help their students encounter the first spark of the teacher within themselves.
John and Marta practice the teachings of Yoga both on and off the mat, incorporating the Yamas and Niyamas into their daily lives and relationships. They are deeply inspired by the wisdom of the Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita and offer this knowledge and passion to their students as well.
In daily practice, Marta and John follow the traditional teaching of Sharath R. Jois from Mysore, who has given them both a Level 2 Authorisation to teach Ashtanga Yoga. To know more about Marta and John vist their website ashtanganilayam.sg and follow their instagram account @ashtanganilayam.sg

Practical details about the retreat center
Currently the internet at the retreat is not reliable. If you are dependent on internet for work, we ask you to bring your own data on your phone, to which you can connect your laptop, if needed. Phones work very well. There is also a cafe 10 minutes from the retreat with good internet, however, it is a busy cafe and not very suitable for work.
Finca Naranjas (previously Cristoforo), our retreat centre is a very simple yet beautiful place, built by an architect named Denis Devaris, who had an intention to create a meeting point for Spiritual seekers. Built slowly over 30 years using volcanic rocks from the island, the rooms are all unique with their own distinct personalities featuring beautiful details and personal touches. Given the nature of these types of buildings, imperfection is to be expected with a plumbing system not quite up to modern standards! However, set right into the land with a wonderfully lush garden, Cristoforo really is an oasis in South Tenerife. When packing for your retreat, make sure you add warmer clothes. From December till March the mornings and evenings can be quite chilly. The rooms are not heated, but are equipped with cozy duvets and blankets.
The food served at the retreat will be mainly vegan and completely vegetarian, prepared freshly everyday by our wonderful retreat chefs. We try were possible to use local and organic products. We sometimes use eggs or dairy in the kitchen. If you have food allergies/sensitivities, please let us know. Gluten free options are available. We have a self service tea & coffee station for guest use and try to provide fruit for snacking during the day.
You have the option to enjoy your food either inside or outside in the beautiful garden.
Maximum number of students is 25.
Morning classes will be taught with maximum 16 students in each class.
Practice will take place inside the beautiful wooden garden Shala. Savasana is usually taken outside to make space in the Shala, especially during full retreats and occasionally afternoon workshops will take place outside. Make sure you pack warm practice clothes for Savasana.
Arrival day and check out.
The rooms are available after 3pm. The retreat starts with an introduction meeting at 6pm, followed by dinner at 6.30pm. All students should aim to arrive for the introduction meeting. The first practice is on Sunday morning and the last practice is on Friday in the morning. The check out is on Saturday at 9am.
